Zimbabawe
 

Our truck is currently in Windhoek and we intend to reach Mosambik at the beginning of december crossing Botswana and Zimbabwe. Does anyone have up to date information about the situation in Zimbabwe, how safe is it to cross this country for the time being?

I am not sure if Zim is still a place to go. The fuel situation must be terrible. And you hear a lot of shit in the News down here.

both times that I went through Zim, people told me it would be terrible and that there'd be no fuel. the second trip, last December, was tougher than the year before and certainly the news in the last year has been dreadful so its likely to be worse than last year. that said, we got fuel last year and stayed at the hillside camping.
its a lovely country with lovely people and a bunch of loonies still "in charge".

I wouldn't rule it out till you get to the border. as you've coming from Namibia, you're presumably coming along the Caprivi Strip and you can go into Zambia instead if the local reports are unbearable.

I'm in contact with people in Zim all the time (and was down there in June/July myself), and although you might have a bit of trouble finding fuel, the security is not a problem for foreigners. Btw, fuel is often easier to come by away from the bigger cities.

We live in Bulawayo (Matabeleland & South West Zim) and although the sittuation is harsh for some locals you should have no problem - in fact people will be delighted to see you. Fuel has to be searched for though - best plan is long range tanks and occasional trips over the border.

The eastern part of zim (Mashonaland/Manicaland) though has been pretty hairy at times - lots of political agitation but again you, as a tourist, should have no probs.

Got your email but thought I had replied…sorry. We are still in Kenya but will be poping home for the birth of our second child in February. We’ll spend a few months in the UK, R&R for Thoko and re-equipping for me, and then we’ll come back to Kenya as we’ve still got lots to see. Maybe we’ll get to see you in Kenya over the next year or two, or even back in Zim after that.

Is it possible to get a transit visa at the Zim border, coming from Nam or Bot and heading for ZA? I'd be in posession of a South African tourist visa.

To my knowledge, there is no such thing as a "transit visa" in Zim, although I've never had to ask for one as I live there.

I have only encountered Transit or "Tourist" (ie: having a valid Kenyan visa and still being allowed to visit TZ without buying a TZ visa and vice versa) visas in East Africa but I am sure someone elae can correct me if I am wrong.
