What to do with my bike in Banjul?
 

Looking at flying home from Banjul at the end of September.

Riding a fairly beaten up CG125 :scooter: with a pretty low mileage on it (25,000km)

What shall I do with the bike? Is it worth selling to make up some of my flight cost? Do people ride motorcycles in Gambia? Shall I give it to a passing kid?

Do cars and bikes normally get written into your passport? Whats the law/legal position on this?

I don't mind setting fire to it if i have to.

You probably won't have any trouble selling it, and it should at least pay your fare home. It won't be entered on your passport. You will be given a temporary permit to use it in The Gambia for seven days, which can be extended when it expires.
It is quite legal to sell it there. The buyer has to pay the customs duty when they register it.
I don't know the value of bikes but cars are worth about five times their UK value.

How much, approximately, is the price of the customs duty (as % of the value of the car)?

I don't think it is a percentage. It was 35000 Dalasai (£1000) for a £4000 4x4 Discovery that I sold last January, but the president had just doubled the duty on 4x4s.
I think a passenger car is about half that but the customs guy seems to make the price up on the day.
But it is the buyers job to pay the duty, so you just haggle for the price you want.

If you are feeling generous, there is a girl that lives very close to 'camping Sukuta' by the name of Bintou [pronounced Bin-too] Fabouye who I know looked after a fellow HUBBER who went down with malaria some years back, on the strength of this I looked her up, any local near the campsite knows her, when I was there in 2006 I gave her my surplus supplies like headache tablets, 'wet' wipes etc which she greatly appreciated.she is someone that will help travellers in need.
