West & central Africa - Route we took & film

Hi Folks,

As part of a look back at our Africa Overland trip, we compiled a 10 minute film that offers an insight into the road conditions you are going to face if you travel the West Coast / Central African route towards South Africa. From the deserts of North Africa and the lush greens of West Africa to the mud of Cameroon and rain forest of Gabon, this video has the lot.

You can down load the GPS track and way points for the entire route at our GPS page

We did a fair bit of off-road driving as well as main roads so the video has a mix of road types for you to see.
We must stress that this route was done in the dry season. Overnight rains and the wet season change roads very quickly, so don't think it will be like this in West & central Africa all the time!!

We hope you enjoy it as much as we did driving it!

Safe travels!

Nick

Nick,

Big cheers mate! A simple but very effective video! The time you took to make it is much appreciated. Looking at taking my DR650 there next year (after I get the engine fixed, another HUBB thread) so its good to so whats out there. Looks amazing. Did you have many prangs, or other issues with the car? Might do some surfing on your blog.

Cheers,
Rossy.

Hi Rossy

Thanks - to answer your questions:

Did you have many prangs: Yes - just a couple of rocks hit with front diff and side of vehicle. Lots of scratches from thorns etc....

or other issues with the car? Yes - nothing more than you expect for a car being taken to such extremes of heat, vibration and punishment on the roads. Main stuff was damage to suspension, failed alternator, gasket on clutch slave cylinder split..... all fixable. Engine performed well.

Might do some surfing on your blog - Thanks - our FAQs has been updated and we have posted other data recently so hope it helps

Cheers

Nick

Hi Nick
I am in Cape Town (South African) and plan on riding my bike up to Europe. Would love to chat some time when I am up on the west coast. Possible?
Regards
Hans
