Angola visa + Cabinda + ferry/ship bypassing DRC?

roamingyak 22 Jun 2012 12:43

romnek72:

1. do you speak perfect/good French?

2. What passport(s) did those that apply have.

3. Did the embassy actually say this - or just you couldn't have one today?

They were getting ready for biometric +visas+ and drc passports when I was there....

Sorry to say this - but your visa is most probably worthless (except you are a citizen of Gabun). this is what we learned here in Brazzaville; the authorities in port kinshasa will not accept your visa unless it is issued in your homecountry (the visa laws having changed 3 months ago) and threaten to send you back or actually do that, unless your embassy is able to secure you a transit visa on the spot; which costs about 310 dollar as far as we heard from a friend (italian) who went through this problems having a RDC visa from cameroon, three weeks or a month ago and was lucky his embassy showed up at the port and managed to get him this transit visa ... we are stuck here in Brazzaville ourselves and trying to figure out what to do ...

Some people have crossed at very small river crossings where things are not likely to be electronic etc. Though actually following the road to the river and having a working ferry will be quite an adventure if in a 4x4....

But definitely an option...

Like already said, if your visa has not been issued in your home country you will experience the biggest trouble you can get yourself into at the Kinshasa ferry/border. I met a guy in Kinshasa who got imprisoned for 2 or 3 days and his ambassy had to get him out, others just get flatly refused and send back, even bribing doesnt seem to work.

I crossed into DRC at Luozi 4-5 month ago, taking a goat-track/piste from Mindouli in the Republic of Congo. The border is a small bamboo hut in the middle of nowhere and the one only immigration guard had to get the entry stamp in the next village by foot, make sure to bring some cigarettes to make him walk a bit faster, but no issues with my DRC visa issued in Cameroon/Yaounde.

The piste to Luozi is serious adventure and onwards after crossing to Kimpese is just a little bit better but still a nightmare if it rains. I did this on a old 125cc vespa scooter from the 70s and broke my frame due to completely ****ed up road with the result of being stuck in Myamba 10km after the border at a catholic mission for 1,5 weeks, make sure to stop there and say hello to father bob and ask him about Chris the scooter dude, that place is so stunningly beautiful and they accomodated me for free with a nice rooom, good people. During this time there was not one single vehicle passing by that went to Luozi so in the end the priest took me in his landcruiser while picking up other priests from Luozi. After 50km that one broke down with a screwed injector pump and i had to wait for another couple of days for a truck that brought me to Luozi.

The ferry was indeed broken down for a couple of days but they will repair it quickly cos its the only transport to Luozi and many people depend on it. It carries two landcruisers or one big truck and goes two or three times a day.

Will maybe post some pictures later if i find the time.

greetings from Kampala
Chris
