Visa for Mozambique on border??

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to get a Visa on the border, crossing from Tanzania into Mozambique (at either border post)??

we are only a short distance away now and it has just been sugested to us that we may need to go back up to Dar to get a visa :(

As far as I know you can NOT get a visa at the new bridge into Mozambique.

Safest way would be to get in Dar...

I was also told you cannot get a Moz visa crossing from Tanzania.

Unity Bridge at Negomane has been open since May, so the crossing itself is relatively painless. No Moz vehicle insurance is available at the border, but you can buy easily in Pemba.

Incidentally, when I called the Moz embassy in Dar, we were told the visa would take a week. The Moz consulate in Zanzibar however turned around the visa within 24 hours.

Yes

we were there in Jan 2009 and we got our visa on the border, we were using carnets and travelling on UK passports, if your close try it, what have you got to lose.
Of course everything is fluid in Africa so it may have changed, good luck

Has anyone had recent experience with getting a Moz visa at the border at the Unity bridge? The Moz embassy in Dar apparently needs 7 days for visa - again, has anyone got recent info on whether it can be obtained there quicker than the official 1 week?

MovingHouse 17 Jul 2011 12:25

Cannot be obtained at any of the borders with Tanzania yet.

Here is the process: Apply at embassy in Dar at GPS: S 6.813581, E 39.290747. Need 2 passport photos, yellow fever certificate. Single entry costs USD45, valid for entry within 3 months allowing up to 30 days stay.

Process takes 5 working days. The visa fee must be paid at the Samora Av branch of NBC bank at GPS: S 6.820327, E 39.285366 (account details must be obtained from Embassy first, but currently are:
Mozambique Embassy
P.O. Box 9370 – DSM
Account #: 0121050004290
NBC Bank
Samora Branch
Samora Avenue)

Take receipt from bank (one per person) back to embassy with application documents.

The passport needs to be left at the embassy for this period. If you are going to Zanzibar while waiting, take note, as the passport is needed for immigration there. The Moz embassy gave us a receipt stating they they were in possession of the passport together with a copy of the Tanzanian visa, and passport details page as proof for Zanzibar immigration. We didn't try to find out whether it sufficed, and bypassed immigration.

Hi,

In 2010 you could not get it at the border coming from tansania but i would recoment you to travel through malawi anyway where you will get the visa at the border if you enter Mosambik. Malawi is such a nice country with such a great lake. The visum for Malawi you will get at the border as well. Have fun there!!!

We would like to cross Mozambique from Tanzania (unity bridge) and wonder if anyone has recent information about getting a visa for Mozambique at this border?

Thanks a lot for any quick reply!

MovingHouse 11 Aug 2012 17:30

We went through the Unity bridge in July 2011 and got visas in Dar. Some friends crossed 2 months ago using the same visa procedure in Dar (see #6). The Moz border post was a 1 man operation, and we had to wake up the customs man at his house...so wouldn't be surprised if the visa at border is still some way off.

Thanks. We have a lot of delay already due to formalities/car problems, so we definitely want to avoid any waitin in Dar. How long did the visa process take you in Dar?

Has anyone experience with getting the visa in Zanzibar (Moz. consulate)? Seems that it may be an option to go to Zanzibar for 2 days to get the visa quicker.

MovingHouse 12 Aug 2012 10:56

5 working days (see post #6). Best to go first thing in the morning as you need the paperwork to get the bank payment done and still make it back to lodge your application before the Moz lunch hour(s).

I have heard of the consulate in Zanzibar being quicker (2 days only) as well, but yet to meet anyone who has done this.

good luck!

Always good to see how fast the forum works. Thanks a lot. Most probably we'll skip our flight to Arusha tomorrow morning and instead go to the Mozambique consulate. If that works (fast enough), then I think this would be the best option for any traveller (just take the ferry or plane from Dar, waiting there is more expensive).

Anyway, I'll post the result...

This morning we went to the Mozambique consulate in Stone Town (Zanzibar) and we got the choice of getting our visa in 1 day (USD 70) or in 5 days (USD 45). Excellent and very fast service. We will collect our visa tomorrow morning.

It's good to note that the Bradt Guide of Mozambique is not quit clear on this point (as it indicates that visa are available at all main land borders, which appears to be incorrect).

Just to be sure: is it correct that we can get a Tanzanian exit stamp in our carnet at the Unity Bridge border (i.e. not in a town hundreds of km's earlier?)?

MovingHouse 13 Aug 2012 19:05

Good to hear re Zanzibar.

Carnet - yes, Mtambaswala at Unity Bridge: GPS: S11.406869 E38.489506 just before the boon on your left as you approach the bridge does passport & carnet stamps. V. quick.
