Vehicle base camp in Dar es Salaam

We're looking for a good 'base camp' in Dar es Salaam.

Accommodation must be 'okay', rooms, or little 'bungalows', but must have comfortable space for five 4x4 and two trucks. It must also be relatively secure and 'out of site' from inquisitive eyes!

Let me know if you have any ideas, thanks in advance!

Sam.

Hey Sam,

There are a couple of campspots that most overlanders stay at, both are perfectly fine, safe, and quite nice as they are right on the beach. To get there, you head into the center of town and take a five minute car ferry across a small inlet. From there it's another 10-15 minute drive. The name of the places escape me but they are very well known and I believe one of them is even in the Lonely Planet.

If you don't like the ferry-option there is a place called Golden Sands (or Silver Sand) a bit north of the city centre.

It's by the sea and they have guards.

Hey Sam,
as MountainMan mentioned there are a lot of these places at the southern beach but they are all a bit busy. P.e.:
Sunrise Beach -> gps info
Kipepeo -> gps info

The other place, Silver Sands, is north of Dar in Kunduchi (20k) and is a bit calmer. gps info

Cheers Peter

Kipepeo Beach Camp: Kipepeo Beach Camp in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania - Home Page.

on the south side of Dar. Nice clean, long beach, nice chalets/bandas and good restaurant/bar.

Silver sands had a bad reputation for being run-down and mosquitos.

Makardi beach (not sure of the exact spelling) is a really cool hang out. I was at Kipapieo for 2 weeks but moved back to Makardi as I found living there nicer. I was there 3weeks. Take the cross harbour ferry to the south side of the harbour then drive south, about 2kms down the road is Makardi the sign board is Blude and orange you can't miss it, its very well known just ask. About 10kms further south is Kipapieo, take the turning for Sunrise resort on the left down to a dirt track, sunrise has camping but not so much atmosphere, kipaieo is about 500m on. All these places are very close together so dive around and see which one is for you. If you do stay at Makardi bay say hi to Jo and Lucho from George for me they were great hosts.

All these places have beach 'banda's' about 20 usd for the banda, camping about 5usd.
