UK to Kenya

Hello

I have read through lots of posts and searched many of my questions but havent found greatly detailed answers for all

I am planning to drive an ambulance (sorry not a bike) from the UK to possibly Kenya or Tanzania (I would like to get to Malawi
or Zambia but only have 5 weeks next summer - im a teacher). The ambulance will then be given to a hospital.

I was planning to get the ferry to Tunisia then head into Algeria.

Next up is Libya (is this Safe? has anyone done it recently?)

Head down through to Sudan (again is this safe? has anyone done Sudan recently)
Then I suppose Southern Sudan into Kenya.

I have also have read I may need Escorts in some countries - where do I organise these? How much do they cost?

Any advice anyone has please contact me.

I have posted this in the Sub-Saharan and Saharan forum as I hope to go through both.

many thanks for your time

Tom

You can't go through Libya for various reasons at the moment. I would forget going to Algeria ( you need a guide from border to border at many £'s per day as well). Your proposed route would be very adventurous by yourself to say the least, assuming you want to explore the desert and not just the main roads.

In your time frame you could try the Venice to Alexandria ferry if it starts running again (we are waiting on details soon hopefully about that - see the thread in the Sahara section).

Else if Syria is ok, then Italy, Greece, Turkey, Syria. Jordan, Egypt, Sudan would be your best bet if no ferry is running. You'll need to research the rainy seasons as you don't say what time of the year this will be. South Sudan is not dry desert ;p

Remember not all borders are open or safe. Darfour isn't exactly a tourist hotspot at the moment either...

5 weeks is not a long time - do the minimum countries you can to get there and enjoy those you do go to a little more in detail I would suggest.

I was hoping to get a team of 3 together for the trip.

Libya is what i thought which is a shame, the Venice to Alexandria ferry would be fantastic.

I am aware that 5 weeks isnt Ideal, I could stretch to 6 at a push if needed.

It would be a case of getting through mainstream Europe ASAP and getting into Africa.

It would be end of July and August (uk summer school hols) so the rain could be an issue.

thanks for your response.

Tom

Can you make contact with me as I am planning a similar trip next year though on a motorbike aiming for Zambia and my fiend who run this place:- Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust - teaching Zambian children the value of conserving Africa's incredible wildlife.

Strikes me that we could usefully team up for a while?
