Trip report Niger/Nigeria/Cameroun
 

Hi everybody,

We just returned from our trip to Cameroun and have made an online report. It is in dutch, but I added a link so that it can be 'translated' to English and French. You can find info on our route and a lot more.

We thank everybody here for their help when we were preparing our trip and we hope that we can contribute to succesful adventures of others.

Thanks for the information; the route is similar to one of the options that I am looking to take but unfortunately I was not able to translate it into English.

Perhaps you could give me some more info:

- What is the situation like in northern Nigeria/Southern Niger? I read a report the other day that there is quite allot of banditry in this region.

- Do you have any information for the route south from Maroua towards Yaounde?

Return Journey
 

Did you follow same route back to Holland from Cameroon; namely Cameroon-Nigeria-Niger and Algeria.

We are at advance stage of doing similar trip from UK, Algeria-Niger-Nigeria-Cameroon.

We are in two minds whether to do the Atlantic route; Morocco-Mauritania-Mali-Niger-Nigeria and Cameroon or your route.

Can you advise any mistakes or anything to look out for.

Hi Martin,

My partner and myself are thinking of selling our car too, but we are not to sure whether the money we would get for it is so little it is finacially better to drive home and sell it here in the UK. Did you get a good price for it, and would you recommend it?

selling the car or driving back
 

Hi,

We were lucky to sell it to a family member for a reasonable price, but ofcourse with some family discount :-)

You have to consider that driving the car back would also mean taking the time and the money to drive it back! A two way trip means double the expenses (except for the boattrip maybe, two-way is relatively cheap). Also you'd miss income if you're not retired. Ofcourse a plane ticket also costs money, but it's cheaper to buy in Cameroon then in Europe (maybe 60% of the price).
Also driving back means you have to face the same adventure again. I'm not sure if i'd been up to it.

There's the option of shipping it back by boat, ofcourse.

Car prices in Cameroon, do not expect too much from it. Especially a car like a Landcruiser is much more valued in Algeria, Niger and Chad. A car dealer told us that our '88 Landcruiser was too new and therefor too expensive for the market.
