Trip from Nigeria to Eritrea

Hi everyone, my father and I were talking of our next trip in Africa and were thinking of reaching Eritrea from Nigeria. I’m not to sure how my father is planning the trip (he is the guru in African motorbikes trips) but I would like to pass through Yaoundé, Bangui, Kisangani, Kampala, Addis Ababa and finally reach Asmara. It would be great to pass through Nairobi too but it would mean making the trip much longer. Any advice and information would be appreciated on the situation of the countries I would have to pass. Thanks a lot

By the way I have done some bike trips in Africa even though I'm just 21 but I lack any information of the countries not surrounding Nigeria, I hope my idea is not too crazy, and forgive my ignorance in African situation but I’m looking forward to study it.

Thanks Again

Ethiopia-Eritrea

Hi Tomread

I guess that you can forget to go from Addis to Asmara. The border between Ethiopia and Asmara has been closed since 2001. The UN Mission (UNMEE) which was guarding the border has been closed a few months back but both countries still don't talk to eachother. You have to go via either via Djibouti or Sudan. Via Djibouti you'll get into Assab (maybe) and then you'll have a long ride along the cost or Eritrea. Not sure if any of these borders are actually open.
I'm in Pretoria at the moment and will head up to Europe in the next few weeks. Would love to visit Eritrea since I have worked there for a year with the UN. If you get any infos on border crossing, pls let me know.
If I get any info, I'll post it here.

Cheers

Claudio
