Trans Africa West Coast

Hi guys,

I am about two weeks from setting of on a solo expedition across Africa via west.

My route

I am looking for some info on great camping spots along the way? More than happy to rough it and go local. I just don't want to miss the great spots.

Also where are the main meeting places for other overlanders?

That the Sheraton in Abuja Nigeria the Hotel Manager lets you camp round the back for free, and two for one during happy hour! Lots of the overlanders end up there to get all those lovely visas!! Tony in Togo there is a KTM dealer for supplies, they have a selection of tyres (21” and 18” rears, don’t think he has stocks 17” but could be wrong). You’ll meet our overlanders on visa stops so check out the posts regarding visas.

Up North West Africa is great for bush camping, no fences and i loved it. I was solo for parts of my trip down and never had any trouble. Ride down a track off the main road then drat off and find a quiet spot with a bit of fire wood and get a brew on!

A wee tip, I carried a small light material hammock (also used as ground sheet, cover for the bike, tarp to keep sun/rain off you…). Roll the bike back on the centre stand tie on end to the rear frame and other side using a tie down strap so it’s adjustable to fit any tree! It’s a seat while you preparing your food by the fire, then lay back and relax away from those bloody ants!

Thanks Duck,

Sounds fantastic. I really can't wait to get going, and think the bush camping is going to be amazing.
Thanks for the advice.
I have been trawling through the sites, but I'll keep on looking for some more spots.
Cheers

Hi Silverback,

If you look at my website, I have put all the best places for camping (most useful, anyway i.e. in towns/cities where you have to go, but camping may be hard to find) under the Notes pages. Also - I have heard recently that due to the actions of a selfish few (taking the piss - washing in the swimming pool being one example) the Manager of the Abuja Sheraton no longer allows overlanders to camp. Tragic if true.

Wild Camping all the way down is pretty easy up to Namibia - look for quarries by the side of roads, where they get the dirt for the road, as good places to pull off when it's a bit too dense just to drive off the road (Gabon, Congo, DRC for example).

Enjoy - we did!

Excellent thread, I'm off on a trip on my motorcycle to this neck of the woods in November / December so I'll be sure to use this as a resource.

did the west coast end of last year/ jan & feb this year and we camped wild most of the days, all very easy and usually tried to find places off the road away from villages so we coul dhave some privacy, but then I was with my girlfriend. If travelling alone then just ask in the villages

enjoy it

Anyone in West Africa

We are currently in Mauri, and having a ball off a time. Just really surprised by the lack of other overlanders along the way. Anyone in the area? We heading south to Senegal\Gamabia and then start working our way to the east.
