Third party insurance for South-Africa

Hello,

I finally arrived from Egypt through Africa in South Africa. In Ethiopie i got me insurance for lots of country's. In Botswana I had to by one on the border and payed me roadtax. When i arrived at border South-Africa the officials said i dont need an insurance. I am insured by dieseltax?
Is that true or am i uninsured now?

Thanks in advance for answering

3rd party vehicle insurance is not compulsory in South Africa.

A portion of the fuel levy is contributed to the Road Accident Fund, which is a government run fund set up to compensate people injured in motor vehicle accidents.

It doesn't cover damages you might cause to other vehicles, so some people take out 3rd party insurance to cover this risk.

Thanks for answering so fast. Good to hear injuries are covered with the R.A.F. Just have to take care not mistakenly hitting one of those fast blinking white cars ;-)

Anyone know who will insure a motorbike for South Africa. I've had a look online but haven't found anyone who will cover a motorbike.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
