The turn off for Diama

Hi,

A friend will be driving to Gambia in a couple of weeks. Does anyone have a picture of the place where you turn off to go down the piste for Diama. I would like to spare her the delights of Rosso.

many thanks.

Diama...

Hi Andi!

No problem, after the second Petrolstation is a garage after the garage turn right! It looks like a small village! Is right!!! You can ask there if you need....

Go early to the Border, get enough water and food . You have to pay for the custom (10 Euro per Moto) ,for thr komune (5 Euro for using the piste) .That's it!!!

The police want money for passage de police. It is not legal!!!!

Build your tent up and wait!!!!!!

The senegal Border is the same! only paying for the bridge!!!

A picture of the place? Sorry, too busy hanging onto my wallet and everything else of value!

almost certainly you will shoot past it, turn round when you get to the gates for the Rosso crossing, opposite the garage, then, swerving round the hawkers, robbers and lowlifes, drive less than 100 metres I think, it is then the first exit to your left, it does just look like a minor track but going this way you shouldn't miss it. It was easier than I expected to find.

Turning for Diama (southbound)

Despite all the assurances as to the ease of finding this turning, I was unable to find it when I went to Banjul last Nov. I asked some locals and they said that the track to Diama was unpassable due to flooding! To cut a long story short they were lying and I ended up crossing at Rosso, interesting to say the least!!! Newbie mistake I guess, don't trust everyone you meet.

So to save your friend the same fate, the GPS coords are N16˚ 30.739 W015˚ 48.742. The turning is very close to the dreaded "gates of Rosso", so be prepared for a little bit of hassle. To make life easier for others I did indeed take a photo of the turning (note the two cops sitting under the tree!)

This should be enough to recognise the turn.

Any questions, just ask away!
