I am Fabian from Ecuador and I want top travel this route and would aprreciate any information regarding:

1- I need to purchase a bike like a KLR 650 or similar with low mileage, is it better, cheaper and easier to do it in Cairo, Nairobi or South Afria?

2- With a bike purchased and registered in one of this countries is a carnet still required to cross borders or not?

3- How about an international license? or can I ride with my local Equadorian lincense. Only plan to travel for a total of 3 months through the whole route.

Lower down in this forum you will find a post from: miquel-silvestre about storage in CApe Town. He has a Kenyan regiustered bmw bike that he wnated to sell. I think that he did a similar trip.
He may still have the bike and could surely answer questions. May be worthwile to contact him. Hope this helps :welcome:

most of the bikes come from Germany, so you can get a South African registered bike with an german logbook which would make it easyer to enter europe without Carnet.

Yes, I did the trip few months ago, rainy season, good experience. I still have the bike there and I don´t like keeping quiet for long time such a good lady. If you really want to do soon the African trip (I mean, really want to do) we can arrange some kind of dealt. No buying, just riding her to Nairobi. No money, just a bank aval in case no bike in arrival. What I mean is if you want ride to Kenya you would do it for free. I could do it again by myself, but there is no point in repeating same trip, especially if you think rest of the World is so big to ride. You give her me back in Nairobi and I will ride her to Europe. Of course, this special offer is open for any one else who really wants to do the Cape Town-Nairobi trip.

Hi I am planning a trip to egypt but do not have enough time to ride back. One solution is to store the bike in Egypt and then fly home till I have more leave to fetch it the next year.
How about me riding your bike from Cape Town to Egypt. You den fly to Egypt and ride her back or you fly to Egypt and continue to the UK. I intend leaving on 1 june 2011. You could also store the bike by me at no cost. That is why I joined the community so that I can offer that service to fellow bikers. I ride a africa twin zrv 750 but I also have a bmwr100rt and a honda silverwing interstate.
