Carnet De Passage for Senegal an update

Hi all,

I wrote to the Senegalese Embassy in London to ask them the rules regarding driving through the country. Anyway they have replied back today and have said:-

"In order to drive through Senegal, you must have a "carnet de passage"
which can be obtained with the RAC if the car is more than five years old. And the end of your staying you must remove the car from the country. Other documents required: valid MOT and insurance."

Thought this might help, looks like I am going to have to shell out a few quid for a Carnet.

Andrew

and yet another time...

yep . In order to enter Senegal you must :

EITHER
a: Have a car newer than 5 year old
OR
b: Produce a valid Carnet the passage
OR
c: Pay for a customs officer to travel with
you (225 Euros)
OR
d: Bribe the douanne officer.

In Diamma , the average bribe for a 5-10 days passavant (that is a permit for you to drive wherever you want in Senegal for 5-10 days) is around 75-125 Euros.

again

If you bribe the customs officer in the region of 75-125 you will enter Senegal with your car , regardless how old is it. (mine was 30 y.o. and a creatively photocopied V5.1 and no problem).

Tips:

Obviosuly bribe the correct officer (I mean , all will accept gladly those 100 euros.. your task is to offer them to the one IN CHARGE OF THE PASSAVANT's BOOK) commonly on the douanne (customs ?) hut in the border. Go straight to the Douanne FIRST and -inside- go stright to the point.
He (the officer) is doing that every hour and expects you to start offering cash-.

Bribbery needs some ammount of "face value" , don't look nervous , etc.etc.. Its something to get used to . but not really difficult.

Apparently is the same fella always -or at least all the overlanders I spoke did the bribbery with him- ,He is a black man (duh!) in its 30's -military outfit- , with lots of gadgets mobile's phones ,discmans -etc- , jewelry and speaks a really good English ,- and will be awaiting for your bribe in the Customs' building.

Hope this helps.
Javier.

Does somebody know who should I bribe to become the one in charge of the passavant's book? If I win an average of 100eur/hour, it would be worth moving to Senegal!

Mow I am somewhat confused. With a car LESS than 5 years old: do I need a carnet or can I get a passavant at the RIM-Senegal border?

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
