Sheraton Abuja, Nigeria
 

Hi,

I have just been told that because of some idiot overlanders (one using the pool to wash clothes and an other leaving their dog out in the parking lot) the Sheraton Abuja is no longer giving overlanders free camping (or any access period) out back like they used to. Does anyone know if this is the case? If it is, does anyone know when these problems happened?

I've always thought we were better than this. If it's true that the policy has changed because of abuses, then I think we really need to start policing ourselves better and stepping on our own that seem to be taking advantage. If it's not, then I think we need to remember how important it is that we keep these great resources and people friendly towards us whenever and wherever we use them.

Please tell me I'm wrong about this.

Oh dear.... lets hope it is not true, but sadly there are some real plonkers and inconsiderate travellers out there now..... Rich idiots making fart jokes whilst on pampered overland trips appearing on tv hasn't been great for 'inspiring' other idiots they can do it also imho....

As somebody who runs a lodge in Ghana told me 'the level of overlanders has been declining over the last 10 years, a lot of idiots who splash the cash at a over landing company and set off with the latest of everything, but no clue or consideration for others who they interact with, they just want the photos for Facebook....'

Maybe if a lot of us write to the manager saying how valuable it was for us to stay and apologise for these (unproven as of yet) plonkers it might force a change.....??

I have been staying at the Sheraton in Djibouti recently which was a godsend, but you need to meet the Swiss manager first to get his permission.... maybe not a bad idea for Abuja also.....?

I do dispair at times........ {big sigh}....

I heard the same rumours about the Sheraton, but I have also heard of people staying there recently. I think Silverback was there in November/ December.

Hey roamingyak, the problem at the Sheraton Abuja are not the "rich" overlanders, but people who are too poor or too thrifty - but still insist on getting the goodies.

Your verbal dress-code tells me that I wouldn't want to see you lingering for free in a Sheraton that I paid my hard-earned money for.

The Shertan introduced a paying for 3 nights minimum rule, and you can shower in the squash courts and use the toilets. Having stayed a few times i have seen other places and most not suited for overlanders as in no space or a dive. I think the Sherton is a bargain and the location is great as you need to get visa's. Happy hour is great fun and the pizzas at the restaurant to create your own topping are pretty good. The head man to speak to is Morton and it is always nice to buy him a gin and tonic to show your appreciation of him letting us stay. Enjoy.
