Believe Sudan is still out as they won't issue visas but some travellers are heading through the Congo, either due South along the western Coast or cutting across towards the East. However given the problems in Eastern Congo, maybe worth keeping clear. Cote D'Ivoire is still unstable but the rest of the countries in between should be fine. We went via Niger, Chad, Sudan, Ethiopia about 18 months ago which was quite easy. If Sudan starts issuing visas again then its the easiest way out of the options available.
