senagal border

is there any new info on getting in and out
of senagal. ie vehicles over 5 years old
can i get through with a carnet or not

Robbert 9 Sep 2003 13:37

There should be no problem with a carnet

Kevin 9 Sep 2003 14:45

From what I've heard on other forums and from people in Dakar a carnet is of no help. The rule is that no cars over 5 ears are allowed in carnet or no carnet. There is talk in the government of changing the law to allow cars above 5 years into Senegal, for tourist purposes but at the moment this is just talk.

bryan 9 Sep 2003 15:57

does this 5 year rule apply to motorbikes?

ag 9 Sep 2003 18:36

As mentioned from Kevin, no matter if you have carnet or not!
(Note that it's the same in all the F.CFA states area...)
I was there 15 days ago and I've sold the car in Nouakchott.
The same problem probably also with the bikes.

By the way, is now time for big internal discussions concearning this new absurde law... (local TV is talking every hour about) and everybody works in Senegal with vehicles is asking to the government to cancell it or give thay some money in order to be able to buy more recent cars/trucks.

Enjoy!

it seems that excactly this is not allowed under the new law.( note that this is, what most postings say, I´m not there)

i still wonder, if there has been somebody
with carnet by now?
there has been talk about a convoi with
custom-officers for a transit to Gambia,
can anybody confirm that ? If so, any idea if they carry on with the convoi, or has it been just a arrangement for a certain period
of days/ weeks after the new law started ?

Hy guys,

we don't have any carnet but, also with it, no way!

Notices wat taken in Nouakchott in middle of august and from the neighbour embassies...
We gone to Senegal without any car and there we've rent a 4x4 to visit the state.

The Gambia was, in that moment, a problem for us to join (with a rented car...) and also leaving the car near to the border was unsafe... maybe next time...

Enjoy!

Anyone learned anything new about this 5 years law.

Does it also apply to motorbikes?

And does a Carnet make any difference?

Latest from the British RAC:
Senegal is closed to vehicles over 5years old, even with a carnet.
Bugger!
I'm going to try it sometime in November anyway.
Good luck to all going,
Luke

Since Senegal still seems to be a bit of a problem have any anyone information about shipping bikes out from Mauritania?

Being here in N'bhou for the moment, I hear a lot of talking that passing with carnet should be possible - although never confirmed.

Planning to be end of the week in N'chot, I will pay a visit to the Senegalese embassy over there, and then head for the Diama border with Senegal - so I will let you know 'first hand' wether it is possible to pass or not with a bike...

Better wish me luck - I might need it...
