I rode down to south africa and my bike is still in SA.
To ship bike back will cost about 10000 rand (£660). I am a South African so I can import my bike into Sa and only pay the VAT on its value, stated on the carnet. But I then cant sell it for 2 years I think?
If this is not your situation, you will have to pay customs import duty. I dont know how much this is but I believe over 100% of bike value!
Anyway do a Google on ITAC. ( International Trade Administration of SA)
Phone number 0027 861 843 384
The bike will also haveto be SABS approved. more money!!

I am trying the reverse of your problem - buying two bikes in South Africa sometime between now and end of July. Then riding them up to Kenya. If you happen to have BMW 650 GS / Dakar we may solve BOTH of our problems!
Location: Umtentweni, Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa
its not so easy for a private person to import an motorbike.
It´s much easyer doing it with an registered importer.
Private you need an LOA form SABS (South African Bureau of Standards) which cost around 500 Rand. Also takes a long time to get it and to register it on the system with the LOA.
the tax is not too bad I thind you pay around 7% (600cc) from the bikes value as tax and than 14 % for VAT. To the value of the bike customs adds on the shipping cost.
I am a registered Importer, so I could help you getting your bike through customs and organize the RSA pappers for the bike. Once the bike it cleared by customs I can organize the registration in one day.
If you come on an Carnet list a low value for the bike like 300 pounds. Its easyer to clear by customs without Carnet.
The plan is to ride from the UK to SA in 2009/2010. Providing the bike makes it (me too) I'm trying to determine the most financially viable option at journeys end, be it freighting it back to the UK, importing and selling it locally within SA.........or driving it off a cliff into the ocean and explaining to the insurance company that it was written off by an elephant! Decisions decisions.
Ship the bikes to South Africa and ride to UK!
Get all the shipping rubbish done with and when you cross the finnish line you are having a couple a s at home! Nothing worse than having all the decisions to make after a great trip.
Also mentally it is quite nice to ride "home" and when you finnish your trip you wont be some lonely biker trying to take a photo of yourself...you will have a whole welcoming committee.
I rode a bike from UK to SA on a Carnet and manaaged to sell it, you will find my email listed in the site listed below in the signature hardwayhome.blogspot.com and I can tell you how, very very easy and no dramas at all.
