Security in North Sudan - Khartoum - Ethiopia

Dear all,

I am just planning a trip by motorbike from Egypt, via Sudan, Ethiopia to Kenya. At the moment I am not really sure about security in this region. Do you have any reliable information on this route?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions,

Lalli

Hi Lalli,

I keep an interested eye on security in general in Sudan and surrounds, as my daughter and son-in-law live and work in Khartoum.

Last summer they collected their bikes out of storage in Nairobi and rode them home to Khartoum, 2 little bikes (225cc and 250cc), via Moyale and Addis Ababa. No problems except repair work was needed in Addis.

My daughter sometimes spends time working in Juba, where she is now.
The whole area is pretty stable as far as I can see, although there are parts of Sudan, for instance the eastern part of the Sudan/South Sudan border, where there seems to be constant unrest.

I still read stories of Hubbers riding Egypt-Nairobi OK on the standard Khartoum-Gonder-Addis-Moyale-Nairobi route. In 2010 all 3 of us had a great time southbound on this route.

Have a great ride.

Lilli,

Have been checking this route since couple of months, and i think when leaving Egypt going south you are cleared of troubles.
Now what Mccrancpin says is even more valuable,i will do it first time
in aug2012 with 1150gsa, all the way to CPT.

Question if you allow me: the border Lebanon/Syria at Masnaa/Jdaidet Yabous, is it open for transit/tourist?
thx for reply------------geert

Masnaa is still open, since officially there is no problem in Syria. In November I was for a couple of days in Damascus, at least in the old part everything was calm, even though it seemed that we were the only foreigners. If you decide to go there get sufficient cash with you since the ATMs are disconnected from the international system and you do not have much chance to get cash. Also credit cards in hotels etc. are not working.

All the best,

Lalli
