Safety in Uganda

Hi there,

Anyone been to Uganda lately? We want to go there, but hear different stories about the safety there. So, what to avoid and what not?

Cheers,
Corne

drove through the north east two weeks ago (diversion on our way south). safe as houses. beautiful, friendly, stacks of overlanders and backpackers. didnt personally go near the rwandan border in the south west as the gorillas are too expensive (US$250 for one hour!) but met cyclists/landrovers/backpackers and 4 trucks who had and loved it, also saying it was safe.

basically, no problems and a stunning country. GO, GO, GO....!

We spent 2 weeks travelling through Uganda with our truck in December 2002: beautiful country, friendly people.

Seemed safe but you should avoid Ruanda area now, north east (Congo border) and north (Sudan border).

Have a good trip
Albert

Uganda

All the investigations I have come up with have said Kampala is one of the safest cities in Africa, we are travelling thru Uganda in Aug. But it is still Africa so I plan to have at least one eye open all the time.:thumbup1:

I am a diplomat in Uganda and also ride my klr in country - overall a secure country - normal traffic dangers on the road though, and there ARE spots to be avoided - Karamoja's five districts in the NE are the wild west with the ugandan army acting as the calvalry in last 8 years with a forced disarm campaign, some roads safer than others, but overall a place to avoid or research VERY carefully, IRC two vehicle convoy attacked in Feb, assasination type killings of gov officials, etc. I ride daily in Kampala and don't worry too much about pedestrians at red lights, etc. in the city. Beautiful countryside, some roads have a lot of traffic, but some are real enjoyable - particularly early sunday morning. feel free to email for more info - or if you need local help while in kampala - trevorolson9999@hotmail.com, oh yeah, with elections in early 2011 situation country-wide COULD deteriorate and election month or so will be tense.
