SA Carnet Horror

I've just been quoted 138 quid (plus courier fees) by the AASA in Jo'burg to extend my carnet which expires 2 days after I cross into SA. It also appears to be a massive time-consuming pain in the arse.
Here's the question - can I stamp out of Mozambique on my way, then get some kind of temp. import permit for South Africa instead?
I.E. is there any way of getting into SA without a carnet???

I didn't use my RAC carnet for taking my UK bike into Mozambique - I got a TIP. can you nip into Zim and back to get a TIP for Mozambique (if they still do them!)
or why don't you head into RSA two days earlier to save the hassle? I wouldn't want to negotiate with RSA customs etc on an expired carnet.

Re-new the carnet through your UK (AA?) provider and get it couriered out to you in SA.

The above solution was suggested to me by Sue Collins at the RAC. In the end (after registering my vehicle in Zim) we found we could travel as far north as Kenya before we needed to buy a Carnet - most other sub-saharan countries make use of TIP's (Temporary Import Permits) including
