Rufiji River Crossing in Tanzania

Hello all,

Has anyone crossed the Rufiji river using the coast road running south along the coast from Dar es Salaam. It seems there is a bridge but its probably 300 years old and its a long way round if you get there and find its been relocated to the bottom of the indian ocean...

cheers,
Rem

Hello Rem,

Sorry you haven't had any replies yet. Google shows road B2 running S from Dar 400km to Mtwara (site of 1048 Groundnut Scheme). Wikepedia says plans to upgrade it to tarmac by 2008! However Google Earth seems to show no bridge where it crosses Rufiji 52km inland from coast, at worst case probably bush ferry!

Hope this may help, Good Luck

Peter

I have travelled the B2 from Mtwara to Dar at the end of 2008. There is a good bridge over the river. The road is all tarmac, besides of c.a. 125 km from to Ikwiriri to Nangurukur.

I was in Dar a few months ago. Didn't do that road, but talked with other travelers. Bridge is out, but there's a ferry, except it is expensive (at least for 4-wheel vehicles).

They are building a new bridge crossing on that river a couple hundred kilometers to the west. The roadway isn't great at present - takes a day to go west, and another day to get back east to the coast road, but there's a passable route if you want (as long as it isn't raining, and then it may not be passable).

In November 2008 the bridge was already finished and road newly surfaced/being surfaced (besides the part from Ikwiriri to Nangurukur, which indeed, after heavy rains can be impassable for a while).

The whole Mtwara - Dar journey takes 10 hours only by bus. In good weather, if there is no traffic jam in Dar, you can go now from Dar to Mtwara in c.a. 8 hours (this is the reason also, that all passenger ferries between the two were suspended).
