Route info Sudan / Kenia
 

I am planning my route using the german book "Durch Africa" reading that I have the following Q's

From north Sudan to South Kenia you have two options

1 via ethiopia and north kenia.
-disadvantage is road conditions and the massai in the north of kenia

2 via south east sudan and enter the north west of kenia.
-disadvantage is the war in the south of sudan though I dont know how bad it is in the south-east.

Rout two has the advantage that the north west of kenia is well travelled by lorries but I dont know which route they follow in Sudan.

My Q's are
1 how bad is the road in north kenia?
2 should you fear Massai on the lose?
3 where do thoose lorries go to?
4 is the war in that area as bad as you hear through rumours?

The zone south of Khartoum is a NO GO, i even doubt if you get permission to go there. My suggestion : Khartoum - Wad Medani - Gedaref - Gallabat.

This is my route as well. Anyway long time no news from you. Sended you a mail but you didn't respond..???

4. Take the safer by a long way route through to Ethiopia. The improved road to Gallabat will probably be complete by now and being travelled by fuel tankers from Sudan! Don't miss the opportunity to spend at least 3 weeks in this fascinating country that is so very unique! John

Moyale - Masabit - down to Archers Post is a very rough road but perfectly possible.

Risk of Samburu / Somali shifta is reasonably high. We got through without a problem and throught it was all police hype but met 4 dutch people in Nairobi who had tried to head north 2 days before and had been stopped due to being shot at, driver taken out by 15 armed men, made to lie on the ground with a gun to the back of his head. Only took £20, gave back video camera / other electronics. Travellers badly shook up, abandoned exped and shipping out.

Met a Dutch motorcyclist who hitched a ride on a lorry which also got shot at. Lorries appear to be main targets. However also met members of Royal Welsh Fusiliers down on exercise who got held up and shot at - and ther in uniform in camed up Landies so if locals prepared to shoot at soldiers then tourists are easy picking.

Perfectly possible but there is a risk. Saving grace is last week Brit government paid millions to compensate several hundred samburu tribesmen for injuries sustained due to ordenance left from Brit Army exercises that has since exploded and maimed them. So at present they are probably richer than most the travellers passing through.
