Riding thru Mozambique

Planning to ride up from Durban, through Mozambique, to Malawi and Tanzania in Dec/Jan. Any thoughts, suggestions, or recommendations?

recomm on Moz

hi guys,
just follow the coast line in Mozambique, I would say. It might be nice to know that there is a new bridge to Tanzania. Not sure whether you get your visa at this borderpost.

In addition to the beautiful beaches along the coast line, I enjoyed Beira for a short stay. It is not exactly on the route, so you have to take a detour from the mainroad going north. Furthermore, the NP Bazaruto Islands are worthwhile, opposite to Vilanculos.

Also please be aware that the main border post at Komatipoort into Moz only issues very expensive visa. An alternative might be to go through Swasiland and get your visa for $25.

Fuel gets a bit more expensive the further you get from Maputo, but in Beira it is cheap again. And from there onwards, the prices increase again.

Enjoy Mozambique man!

hi,

i would travel up the moz coast via vilanculos & the Bazaruto archipeligo & then probably head up to gorangosa NP, then north & cross the new bridge at cia, turn left along the north bank of the zambezi from Beira & then cross the shire river & turn north to Malawi. visit the lake etc then leave east via Mulange & rejoin the road north in moz upto mozambique island / Pemba / quirimba archepeligo, cross the river (this could be the new bridge as it was once a small ferry) & then into Tanzania.. there is not much to see in moz between Beira & mozambique island unless you are into game fishing as there are a couple of lodges on the coast there..

Reversing the way I came, I did Swaziland (a fun visit in itself) to Moz., crossing at the Namaacha crossing which was clean and completely hassle free. From there I hit Maputo and then rode up the coast to (EN1, then switch to EN6) Beira. I then headed back inland along the EN6 to just past Chimoio (good camping at Lake Chicamba, couldn't find tracks for Africa's location for Pink Papaya camping along the road north). I then took the road North to Tete and then to the Malawi border at Zombue (connects to the Malawi M6).

The road is in very good condition all the way North from the Save river.

I don't know about now but 3 years ago the visa in Swaziland was a fraction of the price of elsewhere.
If you dive go to tofu beach, it has some of the best reefs in the world.
