Question about Customs clearance in Cape Town

Has anyone imported their vehicle into Cape Town without using a customs broker or agent? We are shipping our bikes in from Canada via British Airways in early September and our shipping quote is only for airport to airport delivery. I was wondering if it is possible to get through the customs and Carnet formalities without hiring an agent. Any help or advice would be most appreciated!

I don't have any answers for you, but also plan on shipping to CT in September, from Buenos Aires. I am planning on using an agent on this end, but not upon landing.

Lets try and keep in touch.

Import into Cape Town - Our experience

Hi folks,

Noted the thread. we are almost completing our process of importing the car. Its a Land Rover and registered in my wife's name and we just drove down Africa from Morroco to CT via west coast / central Africa. She is a returning South African and we will publish a complete summary of the process here in due course. I can however state that using an agent HELPS!

Doing the import / export process is a pain as rules change and there are forms to be filled in, people to meet, possible inspections etc etc etc... The agent has the latest knowledge on the process and can save a lot of time driving around ports and city centres looking for offices etc.... their fees for doing this are pretty reasonable depending on what you are doing BUT if you are living outside the port or city centre, it can save a lot of time and money in the long run. They already know the right people and what documents need stamping / copying Vs originals - this last point is a major bummer if you submit forms incorrectly. I would say go for the agent - they do help smooth the process.

In Cape Town, I can recommend Ashraf Mallick, IQSA Logistics, +27827017839. Very helpful and very friendly guy.

HTH

Nick
