Old cars into Senegal.
Just an update on the situation.
It is possible to enter Senegal with a car over eight years old but it will cost you 250 Euros.
The customs officer will refuse to let you in, but after a while a guy arrives and does the negotiations and charges you for the passavant.
I have done this crossing every year for the last six years and the price goes up every year.
This year I managed to blag my way through for seven Euros with some dodgy paperwork but the car travelling with us had to pay the full price.
The guy you need to speak to is called Idi.

??? Never heard about such issue.

In which case do you have to pay to enter with a car over 8 years? If you do not have a carnet the passage?

Which border crossings did you take? Gambia, Mauritania, where exactly?

I just entered Senegal today with our 1982 Toyota Land Cruiser and a passavant issued by the Senegalese Consulate in Freetown, Sierra Leone. We didn't pay anything to leave Guinea or enter Senegal.

If I understand it correctly you are only allowed - with the eligible car - to stay in Senegal for 48h, unless you get this period prolonged in Dakar or St. Louis.

Does anyone know if it's also just possible to enter Senegal and drive to Gambia within 48h, i.e. without any registration in Dakar or St. Louis? Since I'll enter Senegal from Guinea, it wouldn't make any sense to me to first drive to Dakar and subsequently to Gambia (which I also would like to visit) and next back again to Dakar and further north...

I entered the country from Mauritania and I had to go to Dakar. not to St. Luis

If you talk with the people on border to give you more time it should work. they normally give you paper where it is written how many hours you have to get to Dakar Customs. explain situation and it should work.

I entered Senegal five nights ago from Guinea with a lassez-passier issued by the Senegalese Consulate in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Passport and Lassez-passier all stamped at the border by the police officer there. No other stamps and no other payment of other offices visited. My vehicle is Sierra Leonean registered and plated and is a 1982 so 31 years old. Was stopped today and no problems with the paperwork (at least they didn't say anything).

When I entered Senegal from Guinee last week, I had my carnet stamped within a few minutes. No passevant needed. Also no problems at the exit (Senegal) and entry in Gambia (carnet was stamped within a record time of a few seconds). Apparently, it's a different story if you come from Mauritania.

Again, no problems to get the carnet stamped from Gambia to Senegal (at Farafenni), so it may only be a problem for those heading south from Mauritania.
