Nouâdhibou - Dakar
 

Hello,
we are planing a trip down to Dakar, 6 bikes, fully loaded camping gear and all, two 650 GS and 4 Africa Twin.
- is the old piste (Nouâdhibou/Nouakshot) on the beach doable with heavy loaded bikes.
- is there possibility to get gas along the way (Louîk or Nouâmghâr).
- In case of problem is there a way to get back on the road from the beach.
We are also looking to ship the bikes back from dakar, if you had any experience with this kinda deal, I'll be interrested with any advice.

Yea, is doable with any bike.
Follow the tamrac from Nouadhibou to North, then turn right (East) and just after the police control post, starts the track that goes to Nouamghar.

No fuel, you can get some at black market from fishermans but, it's unsure...
You can get out of that piste near a small village, Touilit ,and in a feew kms you can reach the tamrac again...

I take it you know there is a new sealed road allthe way from Nouadhibou to Nouakchott which is not shown on a lot of maps yet you need about 350mile range 400 to be on the safe side & rember if you go the off road way the bike will use more fuel our bikes used alot more on Chris Scotts R2 route than the did on the road .

Yes we know about the road that link Nouâdhibou to Nouakchott, I'm trying to spice up a bit the trip, but because this time 2 of the biker have very little off road experience, and no sand ridding, I 'm a bit hesitant to take the beach road if we can not get back on the tarmac before touilit. In any case I'll have to find time to take theses guys sand ridding here (France) and leave then the choice, may be we'll split the group for this part of the trip.

Hi Fred,
consider that sand is'nt so soft as along tipical dune crossing... only Azefal dunes are really sandy but, no crossing there, only some little passages between them in the "gassi", and for feew kms.
Beach piste is absolutely hard terrain, at least enough to be able to drive also with inflates tires.

The main item is that:
as uKKed said, the tamrac is faster and safer... and noone (apart from feew tourists) travel off road now.
It means that you've to be convinced to be alone, even in Banc d'Arguin NP where entrance points from North are obsolete and unvisible (you'll pay tickets only in Nouamghar, when you exit to start the beach piste)...

BTW, if you use gps with garmin Mapsouce installed, you could see the old internal piste -> now is quite the tamrac ;-) and in any time you turn left (EAST) you'll reach it after not so much kms.

There is an entrance point to Banc d'Arguin just from the tamrac (a big white panel with blue words) but, is really totally sandy, absolutely faboulous but you'll cross completely Azefal Dunes, untill the sea (Straight forward CAP 90 untill water ;-) )
