Satellite phones for southern Africa

Hi everyone, I'm in Buenos Aires and heading for South Africa in 2 or 3 weeks. I'd like to carry a sat-phone during my ride there. I plan to start riding in Capetown, then head north to Kenya before returning to Joburg (then off to Perth, crossing OZ and wanting the same sat-phone there!). Can anyone recommend a good place to buy a sat-phone in South America or RSA? I know it's a long-shot, just asking. Thanks for your time. D.

Thumbs up Iridium

Hook, if you don't find anything en route, you can contact Iridium satellite phones directly via their website, www.iridium.com, and they should be able to send you one. They make a very portable sat phone that is shock, dust, and water resistant.

Check this page for sat phone coverage. As far as I know, only Iridium/Motorola cover the whole of Africa.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
