Nigerian Visa situation

Posting this on behalf of a friend in Accra

He's being royally messed about by the Nigerian Embassy, used to getting W.African visas I'm suprised how ridiculous this is getting. Especially as he met an American a few weeks ago who got his in Accra for Nigeria without too much hassle .. He's Irish which usually makes things simpler ...

However I do wonder if it's due to the elections ..

Is anyone else currently in W.Africa trying to get a Nigerian visa and experiencing more grief than usual?

Nigeria visa

I also got refused a Nigeria visa in Accra. I just went to Lome and got it there with no problems. I had to write an application with an itiniary (just look in Lonely Planet and make something up), but got it in 24 hours.

Last visa I got for Nigeria, I just type up a lettr of invite (made the whole thing up) and away we went, no problem A friend of mine though who for the past 20 years has gone every year to spend the winter there doing non-profit work took 3 apps. and almost 3 months to get one. Finally got it though. Took my sister and husband 2 tries this past Sept./06, so it is harder then before, but doable. They both applied in Canada.

Nigerian Visa

We were also refused visas in Accra. We got them no problem in Cotonou, Benin. A minor 'interview' was required to explain why we actually wanted to go to Nigeria...

OK for me....

this prob will not help much but i got my nigerian visa in Accra about 9 days ago for the bargain sum of 100 dollars. Was fairly straight forward- took 24 hours.

im in Poto Novo now. I am told the frontier is closed till monday due to the election.

Thanks all, the visa was finally issued yesterday afternoon - 3 months starting from then.

Apparently had a lot of trouble getting INTO the embassy and then out of it again ...

Won't be going over the border for about 3 weeks yet ... hopefully post-election problems will have gone by then!

Nigeria visa and election

Hi folks,

I was in Nigeria during the first round of the elections - on the 14th April. Although there was some rioting in the South, I think the troubles were really pretty localised. I was in Abuja at the timle and it was fine.

On my way South to Calabar, there had just been a riot in Lafia due to perceived election fixing and there were some burning tyres on the road - the whole thing looked a bit alarming, but nobody gave me any hassle. There were also some bad vibes in the Southern part of Benue state and the police, who have normally been really sound, were a bit more twitchy. Other than that, it was fine, so I wouldnt worry too much. I think the Nigerians rightly see the elections as an internal affair.

Strange about the visa. I got mine in Accra 3 weeks ago in 24hours with no hassles. It seems to be blind luck whether you get one or not!!

Cheers,

Andy
