Nigerian Visa enroute
 

I've been researching Nigerian visa's on the forum but its all a little outdated. If heading from Spain to Cameroon where could I get a Nigerian visa and what would I need? Same for Cameroon.
Any recent info on this please.

An idea of your route would be helpful!

Nigerian visa:

We got our Nigerian visa in Ghana. This is the best place to get it, as the embassy in Benin, while bordering Nigeria, only offers visas for Beninese residents. I'll assume you aren't one of these! ;-)

The embassy has moved from the location specified in all the current guide books. GPS coordinates are N05º 36.308 W000º 12.008.

Overlanders without invitation letters must present a boatload of corroborating evidence. Take photocopies of all, or as much of the following as you have, to hand in with your visa application:

You:

• Passport information page
• Ghana visa in passport
• Ghana entrance stamp in passport
• Medical insurance
• Yellow fever certificate

Your vehicle:

• Vehicle registration papers
• Vehicle insurance (most insurance purchased in West Africa covers several countries. If it expires prior to your entry to Nigeria just mention you will purchase further insurance when you get to Nigeria)
• International Drivers Licence (The one that is valid in Nigeria, as Nigeria requires one different to most of the rest of Africa)
• Front page of carnet (ie: vehicle information page)
• Ghana entrance stamp in carnet

We also needed 2 passport photos and US$86 for a 30 day single-entry visa. NB: You can only pay in US dollars!

Applications for visas are only received on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday mornings. Generally pick up between 2-3pm the following day.

Cameroonian visa:

Simple to get it in Nigeria (in Abuja).

Can't remember the exact cost and details, but here is the waypoint. N9 04 16.9 E7 29 23.1

If I recall correctly we spoke very nicely and they gave us the visa the next day. Otherwise I think it's a 3 day wait... although not sure on that.

As a rule whenever applying for visas enroute we just took as much information as we could. We always have multiple photocopies of the following documents, and apart from the few stickler embassies (eg: Nigeria, see requirements above!), this plus visa fees in US dollars and some passport photos (generally 2 per visa) was enough to get the visa.

photocopies of:

• passport
• yellow fever vaccination
• vehicle registration doc
• carnet
• international driver's licence

Puts my mind at ease as running out of time to get visa's in the UK before leaving day.

In December 08 we (three riders) secured Nigeria visas in Lome, Togo, and Cameroon visas in Calabar, Nigeria.

The Nigerians did ask for letters of invitation and/or letters from our respective embassies stating we were tourists and summarizing our "mission." I had neither, and my (U.S.) embassy refused to supply a letter. It took a little patience and friendly banter but Nigeria approved all visas with little hassle.

Only once down the west side was I asked for proof of vehicle insurance, that was in Senegal. I presented my U.S. insurance certificate, fibbed that it was good worldwide, and was on my way. Good luck.

In Jan10 there is no chance of getting a Nigerian visa in Togo, or in Benin (unless someone can tell me different and I’ll be on my way to Benin tomorrow!). I was told at the embassy the rules changed a year ago and you have to be resident of Togo (she said this also applies for Benin but I can’t confirm this).

Bamako in Mali you can get Nigerian visa and I’m heading west across to Ghana (Accra) instead of Benin as it seems to be a sure bet. Someone might come back and tell me different but the people here says it’s a lottery if you get it or not (unless I had the wrong aftershave on that day!). Go to Burkina Faso, wait, and get Ghana visa and travel that route.

You can get the Ghana visa in Togo, I’ve already asked but I’ll post if I don’t…otherwise all is good.

Info about Togo visa. You pay 10,000CFA at the border and they stamp your passport for 7days BUT you’ve just paid for a month visa! To get the extra days up to the month costs another 500CFA and should get your passport back the next at 4pm unless your lucky like me and they didn’t have it (ejjits!). Where to get it (sorry no GPS coordinate as it was one of the things that got smashed doing acrobatics few days before): on the way out of Lome passing the unmissable U.S. embassy on your right up the dual carriageway take the first left passing some big corporate buildings on the right, first traffic lights hook a SHARP right (on the sandy pavement like everyone else), about 500m on the right is the place you want. Just wave your passport and I’m sure people will show you. You’ll have three identical forms to fill in plus 4 passport photos.

I think you can get a visa for Nigeria in Niamey, Niger

Bamako in Mali is pretty easy - I had mine in 20 minutes after bumping in the Ambassador walking in and him having a like for Kiwi's after having visisted Kiwiland. Others usually got them in 1-2 days - photo copies of your passports and Mailian visa required, and car documents etc

Got my Nigerian visa in Bamako its over the bridge somewhere, i had to just fill in the form and hand over the money but if you tell them youre on a bike take a copy of all bike related copies

Nigerian visa in Bamako (Mali) was extremely easy. Just ensure the paperwork is right. You will need copies of the vehicle and a copy of the Mali-pages in your passport.
