Ndjamena-Abeche-Sudan

Hello all

Our plan was to ride through Chad and Sudan to link North-West and South-East Africa, but the situation in Darfur makes the plan look a bit unsafe/unwise. We really want to avoid flying, but also don't want to take the West coast.

Does anyone have reliable information on the Darfur situation, info on the state of the piste through Eastern Chad into Sudan in the rainy season, or any ideas of alternative routes?

Thanks in advance!

we chose to overfly from Addis to Ndjamena
1) aid workers had just been murdered so it seemed unsafe
2) it struck me as insensitive to travel through and turn a blind eye to the situation

the info that I had at the time was that you couldn't get a visa for Sudan in Ndjamena. people that I know have done the route in car and on bike say its tough in the dry. I would deduce that its even tougher in the wet.

if you look elsewhere on sub-saharan, you'll see that 4 medics went through CAR, southern Sudan, Uganda. that would still be demanding in the wet and unsafe on a bad day.

This route just isn't possible. The border is closed (contrary to rumour), and there is still lots of fighting in large parts of Darfur. The only realistic option from Chad is flying to Khartoum (try Ethiopian Airlines).

There's more on this in my guide to Sudan, published by Bradt.

You can cross from Sudan to Chad (or vice versa) if you first travel to Faya, and from there east, passing through Nukheila oasis in Sudan, ending in Dongola on the Nile. Some Dutch did this route a year ago. Also a German Geo team did this route more or less. But remember: there's no real piste. You've got to navigate yourself, so it's only an option for hardcore Sahariens.
