Nairobi to addis ababa

Hi. Just trying to get some information on the route between Nairobi and addis? Fuel availability, accommodation, security, convoys etc? We are travelling on bikes and can get about 450km on a tank of fuel.

Hey there,

I did the trip a year ago, so I'm not up to date on the security situation. Fuel is no problem, in Kenya you fuel up at Isiolo, then Marsabit and at Moyale (or preferably after the border on the Ethiopian side). Those places have guest houses as well. Likely you will do the 250k from Isiolo to Marsabit on one day and the 250 from Marsabit to Moyale the following day. I think the border closes at 6pm, so try to get an early start. Ethiopia is very convenient for travel, fuel and cheap guest houses will be readily available in every town. Make sure you carry enough water, there is nothing between towns in northern Kenya. Good luck and enjoy.

I cant quite agree on fuel availability in Ethiopia. Aside from the very major routes, fuel can be very hard to find. Often times stations have only Diesel and Kerosene, and depending on the timeof the month, the ones with Petrol are often out of fuel. You can usually find black market fuel, but that tends to go for anywhere between 1.5 - 3 times the regular price and is of even more dubious quality than what you get at the pump. Bottom line: hoard fuel in Ethiopia

As to fuel in Kenya: good quality and readily available everywhere in the southern half of the country. I cant comment on the Moyale road, but on the eastern Turkana route which I took, there is next to none.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
