Nairobi to Ethiopia - no public trans

Hi there,

I've just arrived in Nairobi and i'm going to start working on getting my Ethiopian visa (apparently as of last week just got hard again) before heading up there. I originally intended to get public transport up there but i've spoken to a few people who got to Marsabit and further North in Kenya who had to sit at the side of the road after the public transport just stopped - apparently theres a severe lack of it up there.

So are there any overlanders who are going that direction in the next few weeks as i'd love to join you, its long been a dream of mine to 4x4 or motorbike in Africa but for various reasons i've been taking public transport till now - i'd be happy to pay towards fuel etc.

The road has loads of horror stories about it but it still sounds epic! Many thanks

Charlie

Once you get to Marsabit, there is a bus to the border and there are plenty of local trucks to catch a ride with. Just ask at the hotel you end up staying at.

They will leave pretty early in the morning as they like to do that stretch in one day.

If all else fails - ive heard of people hiring a 4x4 and a driver from one of the hotels for not too much money.

Best of Luck

I passed through there in March 2012. If there isnt a bus, you talk to the truck drivers - ALL the locals do this. Jump on the back and meet some interesting people, just remember to take lots of water.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
