Motorbike storage in Dar Es Salaam..

I'm having to leave my motorbike in Dar for a couple of months, can anyone suggest a safe place to store it from mid November?

Thanks all.

The camping places are all next to the ocean there, they are your best bet unless somebody knows differently about a hotel in town(?), but it would be a very wise move to get a cover for the bike and smear grease on anything likely to rust, as the salt in the air and humidity works quickly.

I had my landy there for 6 months after an accident and it suffered badly from rust.

Option 1: Mikadi Beach Resort - Jo and Lucho (Zim and Chilean owners) looked after my landy for 3 months whilst I was in hospital and are lovely people. Can be a little noisy at weekends, but plenty of shade, close to the Dar ferry and cheap.
Mikadi Beach

Option 2: Kipepeo - nice place, a bit more upmarket than Mikadi, but the camping has no shade at all and everything is more expensive and more impersonal. Australian/Dutch managers who are nice.

Thats a good start - I would avoid Sunrise Beach Resort next to Kipepeo as I was badly electrocuted in their shower 6 months ago and am still trying to recover. Management are absolute wankers. Avoid Silver Sands in the north, an absolute run down dump.

Good luck!

Another option in the city is the YMCA. They have secure parking that's all locked up overnight with a security guy on the gate. We left our 4x4 there for a few days while we visited Zanzibar and everything was fine.

@roamingyak, was the shower the same model that's all over E Africa? Those things always made me nervous, but surprisingly you're the first person I've heard of having a serious accident with one. Hope you recovery fully soon.

The guy who runs Tuk Tuk motorcycles used to have both a small workshop outside town, along with a separate storage unit where he kept all his stock.

If you asked nicely and bought something, he might let you keep your bike at the garage. I haven't been there for some years, but there used to be a few bikes kept in the workshop.

The details are posted separately on the HUBB.

Alternative to the YMCA would be the YWCA right next door - rooms are cheaper and they do have parking space (even though most guidebooks will tell you they don't).

Left my bike there for 2 weeks for 1000 Tsh / day, cars are Tsh 2000 / day (about a euro). Just talk to the guy in the yellow shirt (you'll see who I'm talking about) and he'll probably be able to arrange something.

Good luck!

We left our car at Sunrise Beach Resort (at S6.85055 E39.35899) for a week in their secure parking area for TSh 3000/day with no problems. It is right next to Kipepeo. Friendly and efficient place.

We left our bike in Dar with a HU member back in Jan -- going to retrieve it in 2 weeks. She is moving out of Dar, so that option is gone, but try someone else on the HU Community.

NOTE: Only allowed to leave a vehicle for 30 days in Tanzania -- we got an extension thru the TRA for 1 year...

Anyone hovering around Tanz, Uganda, Zambia in the next month?

Cheers!
Chris

Thanks/African showers.

Thank you very much to everyone who took the time to reply to my post.

I ended up having to fly the bike on SAA down to Cape Town but at least I now have some good options for my next visit to Dar.

As for showers in East Africa...

I've started switching off the power supply to the shower before I get in, that way when you look up and see the water leaking onto the bare wires it's not so alarming!

Al.
