Madagascar

There doesn't seem to be any way of getting my landy to Madagascar easily, so has anybody flown there and rented a small motorbike or bought one etc etc?

Seems like lot of people are riding/driving through Africa, but Madagascar seems to be out of the scope.
Is there a reason for this? Hard to get in? Or something else?

Probably no ferries going there from the African mainland...? At least a decade ago, when I was in South Africa, it was like this.

Thumbs up Hard Times

It's really expensive to get a vehicle shipped over to Madagascar, and then the temporary import process is hideous.

there are several hire companies, the nicest guys seem to be
Piste Rouge : Location de motos Madagascar

Alain is very friendly and can help out. The website is in french but fairly easy to understand with lots of pictures- you can use any of the on-line translating sites to translate a message to them.

Good luck

Hopefully this couple is reading this blog and can give some more details for shipping the bikes there

Boat to Mada.

If I can chime in... It is actually possible to go by boat to Madagascar from the mainland. In 1994/1995 I biked (read bicycle) all the way between Cairo and Dar/Zanzibar. I then hitched a ride on a passing sailing boat over to Grande Comore, then another one to Anjouan, Mayotte and a barge eventually took me to Nosy Be. I then rode my bike around Mada (north to south inland then along the east coast back to Tamatave) and from there hitched a ride on a cargoship bound for Mauritius and then from Port-Louis the regular ferry to Réunion. You'll need time and luck to organize this! Back then There was VERY little going on in terms of cargoships between Mombasa/Dar/Zanzibar to either the Comoros or Mada. A few sailing boats pass by but they're hit and miss and anyways most likely won't have space for a motorbike. I think Durban in South Africa is worth a try though. The cargoship I took out of Réunion to Mahé in the Seychelles was coming from there and had stopped in Mada before calling at Réunion. The captain and the crew were very cool and they had a few berths on board for tourists (I went for free). I don't remember the shipping company's name but a quick enquiry at the harbor would give you leads. Mada is absolutely stunning. Lots of French people from Réunion bring their own bikes or rent them there. The east coast is incredible, think crossing the Congo with pistes that turn into sents and missing bridges...
