Madagascar - Horizons Unlimited

Leaving for Madagascar, Oct 2003. Staying for 7 months. I plan on buying a dirt bike there or Mauritius. Any thoughts on shipping a bike over, I heard it cheaper than buying one in Madagascar. How is the gas situation in the far far south? Any travelers experience with police and military there?
Any advice or thoughts on Madagascar would be great. Thank you in advance.

Apparently there's a serious near-famine situation going on , with food aid being delivered at present .

I am also interested in shipping/flying in my motorcycle, have you been able to find any infor regarding this, or anyone who has in the past?

No real info but I have been hanging out at the Lonely Planet Bulletin board for a week now. Good place to get travel info... As for getting a dirt bike to Madagascar. I did get a reply recommending that I buy in reunion rather than Mauritius. I have heard stories to that effect the last time I was in Madagascar. the problem is that In reunion you really have to know your french. the best I can do is order food---not buy a bike and get it over seas....

I 'll stay intouch if I hear more....I may just buy one in Mad and hope for the best that I can get a good bike for a good price.
