lake turkana route

Hello!

We are 4 bikers in Nairobi now seriously opting for the Lake Turkana route, but we would like to have some recent information on the route and the availability of water and petrol. Did anyone rode this route recently? Which exact route did you ride? What was the quality of the road? How many days did it take you?
For how many kilometres is there no petrol? Is there any black market petrol around, or not at all?

Is there water available? We do carry a waterfilter.

Thanks for sharing information!

We have done that route end March this year from Nairobi to Ethiopia. You can read here.

There is most probably be petrol at Lyongalani, but you will have to make sure you can get at least 900km worth of petrol. Your bikes are going to drink fuel. Also Ethiopia experience huge petrol shortage and they charge up to 40birr per liter on the black market.

To Koobi Flora there's a deep sand stretch around 12km and from there on rocks all the way. Water you can get at Koobi Flora and Karsa Gate.

Try not to stay in Omarate the people charge stupid prices for stuff.

The long and short of it is, do not go around the park from Carsa gate to Illiret the road is about non existent. If you can not ride rocks and sand do not ride there, it's remote and help far away.

It's a good blast enjoy should you decide to go.
