Kenya Invades Somalia

Has anybody been to Kenya recently? With Kenyan forces on their "Linda Nchi" offensive against al Shabab and now moving across the boarder, new security factors are coming into play. The affected areas seem to be the Northern Coast (Lamu area), busy areas of Nairobi (shopping malls, discos, etc), and areas bordering Somalia.

Has anybody been to Kenya since the breakout or have any new information that can be shared with the board?

I left Kenya about 5 weeks ago, we had spent a week on Lamu Island as well. It would be a tragedy if this little paradise became unsafe to travel to. I think over the next year or so there will be repercussions felt in Kenya & Nairobi is the obvious target lets hope I am wrong as I am due back there in Aug. to continue our trip south. In the mean time I hope all fellow adventurers in the region stay alert 7 more importantly safe.

I'm in Nairobi now, for a couple more days. Have had no problems at all and only the usual extra security you'd expect - similar to what we had during IRA mainland campaign periods in the 80s/90s.

Happy to receive PMs from anyone who wants more detail.

In Kenya at the moment. Lamu has practically closed down for now with virtually no accommodation open. From Malindi southwards along the coast is fine with increased security. Nairobi has increased security in the obvious places. The atmosphere is a bit more relaxed after last week's swift arrest and sentencing of those accused of the grenade attacks here.

Kenya's presence in Somalia

"Kenya Invades Somalia"

Not really accurate description, Somalia has asked/allowed Kenya to help against Al-Shabaab. Kenyan soldiers will be there for some time to come working together with Somalia in an effort to combat Al-Shabaab.

"Not really accurate description, Somalia has asked/allowed Kenya to help"

Not really accurate either, it implies that Somalia has some kind of functioning government who can authorise these things, which is not really the case.

Plenty of extra security in Kenya at the most likely targets, but situation seems normal....?

Seems the usa is also heavily involved:

Kenyan driver killed and one Swiss tourist wounded in attack by gunmen on safari vehicle in Shaba National Reserve.
Last Modified: 04 Nov 2011 20:31

Gunmen have attacked a safari vehicle in a north Kenyan game reserve, killing the Kenyan driver and wounding a Swiss tourist, according to local police.

Friday's incident in the Shaba National Reserve, 300 kilometres north of Nairobi, the capital, comes with the country watchful following several attacks and abductions targeting tourists and aid workers near Kenya's border with Somalia.

A policeman told the AFP news agency that two groups had carried out the attack.

"The information we have is that the (first group of) attackers came from the forest and opened fire at the vehicle; it sped off and another group a few metres away, also from the forest, shot at it, fatally wounding the driver," he said.

The Swiss embassy in Nairobi said that one female Swiss citizen was wounded and was receiving medical care. Another Swiss national, a male, was not injured.

Marcus Ochola, a police commander, said the injured woman had sustained gunshot wounds and that a manhunt for the perpetrators of the attack was under way.

The previous attacks, taking place near the Somali border in the last two months, left two dead and three Western Europeans abducted and taken across the border into Somalia.

A British man was killed and his wife abducted from a beach resort in northern Kenya on Sept. 11. The gunmen fled to Somalia where the woman is still being held hostage.

A French woman was kidnapped nearby in the Lamu archipelago three weeks later and taken to Somalia. She subsequently died. Two Spanish aid workers were snatched from the Dadaab refugee camp later in October and also abducted across the border.

Those attacks were cited by Nairobi as one of the reasons it sent troops into Somalia last month to pursue al-Shabab fighters which it blamed for the abductions.

AFP: Kenya's tourism sector under renewed threat

Priffe, "If you don't read the newspaper, you are uninformed; if you do read the newspaper, you are misinformed." Best to get your propaganda from a variety of sources I find. If you have any interest in what is being done in your name, it is prudent to listen to those to who it is being done to.

Anyway, the tourist shooting may be a 'local' incident as reported, but being a little street wise on the ways of governments wishing to protect their tourism industry you'd also have to think that this is perhaps the best line to take, even if it is not the case.....

Interesting report below, worrying if it was recently planted....

GARISSA, Kenya (Reuters) - A Kenyan police jeep escorting U.N. vehicles struck a landmine in the country's Dadaab refugee complex near the border with Somalia on Saturday, police said, underscoring the mounting threats facing aid groups and refugees in the camp.

The explosive device failed to detonate. The incident took place close to where two Spanish women working for the medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) were kidnapped last month.

"The police land-cruiser was escorting the morning U.N. convoy to Hagadera camp," District Commissioner Ndambuki Muthike said, referring to one of the three camps at the refugee site.

"It ran over what was discovered to be a mine that had been partly buried in the sand and covered with a cooking pot."

It was not immediately clear who planted the device, which was set just a few hundred metres from a police post. Banditry is common in the area but landmines are rare.

The abduction of the Spanish MSF workers, who were taken into Somalia, was the third in a spate of attacks on Westerners in Kenya. The kidnapping helped spur Kenya into sending troops into its lawless neighbour in a bid to crush al Qaeda-linked rebels.

The al Shabaab militants have vowed to bring the "flames of war" across the frontier in retaliation. Security experts have also voiced concerns the rebels would increasingly turn to softer targets, such as tourists and aid workers.

Dadaab, located about 100 km (60 miles) from the Somali border, was set up in 1991 to house Somalis fleeing violence in their country. The camp's population has swollen to more than 460,000 people this year because of famine in Somalia.

Separately, residents in the Kenyan border town of Hulugho said a gang of suspected Somali gunmen riding donkeys attacked the frontier post late on Friday. The raiders later crossed back into Somalia.

Kenya, East Africa's largest economy, has long looked warily at its chaotic neighbour. Somali militants frequently launch cross-border assaults on border towns and Kenyan security forces.
