I go from Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Sudan towards Ethiopia en then down to Kenia.....South Africa.
Any advice is welcome.

Hi Derek,

My route seems a bit closed ... and apparently, crossing Sudan is not easy esatward ...

When are you leaving ?
What type of bike/car are you driving ?

Hi,

I (we) are leaving october 2002 from holland to cape town, Sudan is a bit tricky but with a bit luck not a big problem. Just the visum is a bit a pain... visit our site for more info www.africa-expedition.org

Good luck on that Sudan visa - I have ferried aircraft from East Africa to Europe, and I found it impossible to get a permit to simply fly over Sudan, even without landing anywhere. I had to dog-leg through Djibouti, Eritria, up the Red Sea and into Egypt.

I would not take anything for granted when it comes to getting in or out of Sudan, so far as paperwork is concerned. I'm not suggesting it can't be done, I'm just saying it will probably be the most difficult visa to get.

Hi, I would think that the Sudanese are probably a tad nervous about people from North America flying over theor country as there have been incedents of things droping on them.

Currently in Sudan (for 3 weeks...)

Have met at least 10 other travellers and they got their visas in Ethiopia or Europe. It's not difficult tp travel here, but you need some papers. Travellpermit and photopermit, you can get it for free in Khartoum.
I've been in seventeen countries in Africa on this trip and the Sudan people are the most friendly. The police have given me tea and softdrinks.. They paid the fuel and food for a broken ZA-biker...

You will not notice the war in the south. The only thing in Khartoum that reminds you about war is that the cars turn off their lights when crossing the bridges over the Nile so American bombers not can see them...

Go for it!!

We went Chad - Sudan - Ethiopia - Kenya - no problems. Another friend went Chad - Sudan - Eretrea - Djibouti - Ethiopia - Kenya - again no problems (wish in hindsight that we had done Eretriea - Djibouti - pictures look cool. Don't think you can go direct Eretrea - Ethiopia.

Somalia by all accounts has to rate as seriously dangerous. Without having been there it might be okay but it has a very dangerous reputation, far more so than Congo / Sierra Leone / Afghanistan / others.
