Invitation for The Gambia
 
Hello all,

couple of months ago I finished my 7-months West Africa tour on the bike, but I sorta fell in love with Africa so I decided to come back to try work and live here in The Gambia.

So to all of you who are travelling around West Africa, or planning to do so, you are all welcome to come and visit me in The Gambia and stay over a couple of days. I can't offer you much luxury, but if you are looking for a relaxed place to stay for a couple of days (or longer), feel free to pass by...

Also for information regarding shipping bikes around, to, or from West Africa, feel free to drop me a line; since I am working for a shipping agent over here, I should at least be able to give you some answers...

It's all true!

I dropped in on Jef about 3 weeks ago and ended up spending 2 weeks at Jef's house and getting to know some eclectic locals.

Laid back would be the perfect description if it wasn't for the late night partying. I had to leave to give my liver a rest..

I will probably be passing thru Banjul again after my trip down to Ghana (via Mali, Burkina) in another 4 weeks.

Hi Jef!

I,m concidering to have my bike (BMW F650 GS) shipped from Northern Europe (alternatively UK or France)to West Africa. I plan to do West Africa later this year, but I dont have a fixed date yet. Depends on the route and shipping-options. What do you think? Is it possible to have the bike shipped in to Banul, or am I better off doing the Atlantic route down from Morocco. I did Morocco earlier this year, but the thougt of riding down through Mauritania is not so appeling as starting directly in Gambia or Senegal. Any advice will be highly appreciated! Thanks

Hi Dizzie,

It is definitely possible to get the bike in to Banjul from North West Europe. The choice between driving or shipping is quite a difficult one, really depends on what you want. If time is not a big issue, I personally would go for the driving. The desert-part in Mauritania is actually a pretty fabulous experience, and the 650 is great for it (I did it myself with my 650 - only thing is to try and find a convoy to join, for safety and also to put your luggage in a car if possible).

For the shipping, I suggest you send me an email directly to discuss this further so I can look for the best option for you. In general you can say that Dakar has more options for shipping, but customs/officials and stuff tend to be difficult and expensive in Dakar, so it's a balance you have to make...

Hi Jef,

I am planning on going down to Gambia from the UK in December. I would like to either sell my motorcycle (3AJ), or alternatively, donate it to a legitimate charity (perhaps riders for health).

How can I do this legitimately? I presume I'll have to pay import taxes on entry into the country? Do you know how much these will be?

Selling a vehicle in Gambia is trouble-free for the seller (i.e. , no vehicle details are written in the passport , no restrictions about leaving the country without it )

The hassle is on the buyers(recipient) side.
If you wanna sell a vehicle in Gambia (Banjul) Id suggest you to speak to :

We spent a month in the Gambia whilst on our trip down the West Coast of Africa and we can recommend a great alternative to Jef's invitation (rather than going to the Sukuta camping that everybody we've met complain about).
We stayed on the beach with this great guy, Fansu, who has built a small restaurant on the edge of the water. He is the best cook we have come across during our whole trip, you should be able to camp in security on the deserted beach and you won't be disappointed by his welcome.
To get there take the coastal road South past Ghana Town and TANJI. About a couple of kms south of TANJI you will see a tall Mobile Phone Tower by the village of Batakunku. Go to the foot of the Tower and turn right, down the track towards the sea (150 metres, sandy). When you reach the beach, turn right, the place is another 100 metres away.
Tell him Tony and Helen sent you, he’ll be very pleased.
