Invitation for The Gambia

Hello all,

couple of months ago I finished my 7-months West Africa tour on the bike, but I sorta fell in love with Africa so I decided to come back to try work and live here in The Gambia.

So to all of you who are travelling around West Africa, or planning to do so, you are all welcome to come and visit me in The Gambia and stay over a couple of days. I can't offer you much luxury, but if you are looking for a relaxed place to stay for a couple of days (or longer), feel free to pass by...

Also for information regarding shipping bikes around, to, or from West Africa, feel free to drop me a line; since I am working for a shipping agent over here, I should at least be able to give you some answers...

Jef Imans

(and for those interested in the shipping aspect: our company is Pablo Shipping Limited, based in Banjul)

It's all true!

I dropped in on Jef about 3 weeks ago and ended up spending 2 weeks at Jef's house and getting to know some eclectic locals.

Laid back would be the perfect description if it wasn't for the late night partying. I had to leave to give my liver a rest..

I will probably be passing thru Banjul again after my trip down to Ghana (via Mali, Burkina) in another 4 weeks.

Thanks for the hospitality and see you soon, Jef.

Rick

Hi Jef!

I,m concidering to have my bike (BMW F650 GS) shipped from Northern Europe (alternatively UK or France)to West Africa. I plan to do West Africa later this year, but I dont have a fixed date yet. Depends on the route and shipping-options. What do you think? Is it possible to have the bike shipped in to Banul, or am I better off doing the Atlantic route down from Morocco. I did Morocco earlier this year, but the thougt of riding down through Mauritania is not so appeling as starting directly in Gambia or Senegal. Any advice will be highly appreciated! Thanks

Hi Dizzie,

It is definitely possible to get the bike in to Banjul from North West Europe. The choice between driving or shipping is quite a difficult one, really depends on what you want. If time is not a big issue, I personally would go for the driving. The desert-part in Mauritania is actually a pretty fabulous experience, and the 650 is great for it (I did it myself with my 650 - only thing is to try and find a convoy to join, for safety and also to put your luggage in a car if possible).

For the shipping, I suggest you send me an email directly to discuss this further so I can look for the best option for you. In general you can say that Dakar has more options for shipping, but customs/officials and stuff tend to be difficult and expensive in Dakar, so it's a balance you have to make...

Trust this helps you already a bit,

cheers

jef

Hi Jef,

I am planning on going down to Gambia from the UK in December. I would like to either sell my motorcycle (3AJ), or alternatively, donate it to a legitimate charity (perhaps riders for health).

How can I do this legitimately? I presume I'll have to pay import taxes on entry into the country? Do you know how much these will be?

Cheers,
Rejean

Sorry to inform that due to quite unforeseen circumstances I'm no longer in The Gambia. Currently no idea if/when I will be back in The Gambia.

Sorry for those on their way and who I had promised a place to stay...

Jef

Hi !!!
Selling a vehicle in Gambia is trouble-free for the seller (i.e. , no vehicle details are written in the passport , no restrictions about leaving the country without it )

The hassle is on the buyers(recipient) side.
If you wanna sell a vehicle in Gambia (Banjul) Id suggest you to speak to :

WolfGang Schurbaum (a German ), "CAR DEALER" Sukuta
email : sukutacarpark (at) yahoo.de
(Gambia) 990 56 85

He is in the busines of buying / selling cars from Overlanders . He can assist you with your sale , find a buyer for you , etc..
all with European standards of reliability , honesty and efficiency.

Definitely the best way to dispose of / sell a car in Gambia.

Have fun.

We spent a month in the Gambia whilst on our trip down the West Coast of Africa and we can recommend a great alternative to Jef's invitation (rather than going to the Sukuta camping that everybody we've met complain about).
We stayed on the beach with this great guy, Fansu, who has built a small restaurant on the edge of the water. He is the best cook we have come across during our whole trip, you should be able to camp in security on the deserted beach and you won't be disappointed by his welcome.
To get there take the coastal road South past Ghana Town and TANJI. About a couple of kms south of TANJI you will see a tall Mobile Phone Tower by the village of Batakunku. Go to the foot of the Tower and turn right, down the track towards the sea (150 metres, sandy). When you reach the beach, turn right, the place is another 100 metres away.
Tell him Tony and Helen sent you, he’ll be very pleased.
