how do you sell your car in South Africa?
 

Hi,

tried to post this thread on the paperwork forum, but guessing that the people with experience with this sort of thing might be more frequent visitors here:

we are planning a trip from Europe to South Africa and instead of shipping our car back home were thinking it would be an easier and cheaper option for us to sell the car and fly home.

However, it seems this is more difficult than we thought paperwise, also considering that the car is a left-side driven one. Does anyone have any experience in this field? Perhaps there are countries close by where it might be easier?

Hi - sold a few UK regisered vehicles in SA to people making the return trip. There's a bit of info on Africa4x4Fundi.com about buying/selling vehicles in SA.

You aren't allowed to register a left hand drive vehicle in SA so it has to remain on a carnet, best bet is to sell it to someone making a return trip.

No import
 

Sorry, its not allowed to import used cars & trucks into South Africa. For Motorbikes you can get an import permit. Only RSA residents can import used cars returning home after been more than 12 month out of the country and the car has to be more than 12 month registered in their names. For left hand drive younger than year 2000 you anyway dont get an import permit.

I would try to sell a left hand drive car in Angola. As they drive on the right side of the road.

What car are you driving down ? I would like to drive a car from RSA up to Angola and try to sell it over there.
