Is South Sudan doable, or should I think of something else?

So, I was soaring next to Lake Malawi the other day, and I met an Englishman riding a bicycle.
"Doctor Livingstone, I suppose" I said. He answered back with a shy grin. We talked a bit, I told him I was on year two of my trip around the world on my motorbike Fefa.
"So, how are you going to get to Egypt?" he asked.
"Well, I will apply for all the visas -Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt- in Kenya."
"No way, they don't issue visas in Ethiopia embassy in Kenya, only in your own country"
"Oh, shit. What shoud I do?"
"You could send the bike to Adis Abeba by plane and get a visa-on-arrival at the airport"
"Sh***, that's expensive"
"You could send your passport back home and get the visa done in Madrid embassy"
"Oh f***k, I hate being stuck in places"
"OR you could go through South Sudan"

...

...

So, is this last option possible? Can it be done? Is it safe? I mean, I've crossed Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, both supposedly dangerous countries -Kyr was under a civil war when I crossed it- and all I found was friendly people. Is there a real risk in South Sudan and the route to Khartoum? Is there A route of any kind?

I know of 2 Frenchmen on bicycles who crossed into South Sudan from Uganda (Gulu to Juba) 2 weeks ago. Thing is, they had to fly to Khartoum from Juba: there used to be a boat but it was discontinued due to civil war flaring up again along the way. My bet is that it is impossible to ride/drive all the way overland.
From what I know people DHL their passports to their home countries to get the Ethiopian visa there. Not very convenient but cheaper than flying.
