Gas stations in South-Eastern Mauritania

I'm considering a trip to Kiffa and probably further on to Mali. I am somewhat concerned about petrol/petrol stations availability. Questions:

- what is the reasonably recent situation: ARE there gas stations between Nouakchott and Kiffa, are they short of supply, and if so, how likely?

- can you suggest any Android / OSM - based navigation solution, that would have petrol stations as POI?

- except for building a larger tank (not really an option for a BMW F650GS), what would be other reasonable solutions for extra fuel capacity? Is that OK to ride under Saharan sun with a petrol canister fastened between the topcase and a rack-pack?

Hi

The are number of petrol stations in Mauritania but the question is where the petrol is available. Mauritania is a diesel based country. I was there in January, I have f650GS too but equiped with extra tank from Touratech, and cross the Africa from Warsaw to Cape Town. Mauritania was the only country when I had to use my extra tank fully, jerry cans and eco driving too
But read somewhere that others were lucky and found some petrol in that country.
As I was in Jan the sun and temp. were not an issue, but starting from Gabon there were. Take bike cover with you, sometimes your bike covered=less troubles & fans

I heard that Total sells petrol in Mauritania

There are several villages en route where you can find gasoline by the bottle...not the best quality of course but to get you to your destination.
Btw the Tracks for Africa map doesn't look too good. Nor does the other maps I have for this area or for western Mali. You have to ask your way and be patient.

It seems you don't have the right maps priffe.
Knowing the right sentence in French finds that elusive fuel but don't forget to do a taste check...

Has any one got a very detailed road map of Mauritania, that includes the untarmaced tracks?

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
