From Nigeria to Algeria - Still Possible?

Hi there,
I'm planning a trip to Nigeria next year, and then i'd like to go through land 'til Ghardai, Algeria, on buses, bush taxies or auto-stop/trucks.
I'd like to know if anyone could tell me anything about the Niger-Algeria border of Assamakka/In Guezzam: is it open? And d'you know if is it possible to obtain an Algerian visa to enter the country via-land at In Guezzam without any guides?

Post in the Sahara forum, you'll get better answers there.
AFAIK, the border is open.
But when it comes to Algerian visa, I think that you still need invitation etc sorted out beforehand, even if entering from the south.
