Fouta Djallon - Guinea

Hello all,

I am planning on travelling through Guinea in early November, coming from Mali. I mainly want to see the Fouta Djalon highlands, and then head in teh general direction of Ivory Coast, trying to avoid teh trouble in Liberia and Sierra Leone border areas. I was goingt o enter Guinea at Kola (coming from Kenieba/Mali), then go through the highlands and head to Labe. Has anyone got any good tips for the area or ideas on teh best/most scenic routes ? What areas to avoid ? I have read all the guide books, was wondering if anyone has been there lately. Also, what about teh Tamgue Massif, is that worth looking at ? It also says on the Michelin map that there are difficuklt and dangerous sections on soem of the roads up there. Is that because of wetness, steepness or rocks, or a combination of all ?

Txs already,

Hi there gozell,,

I am in Ghana now, I did that trip that I was talking about. It was very well worth it, was excellent, as a matter of fact. In hindsight I rate this as among the best experiences I have had since starting my trip.

Basically I went south from Kedougou to Dindifelou, some very nice falls there to look at, then after that you pass thorugh the Senegalese border (exit) and take a very steep climb up a mountain, or actually not that steep, but very rocky and very difficult. I headed to Mali-ville, which is one of the highest points in Guinea. To get there is less than 100 km's from Kedougou, but will take you a day. The road is quite (very difficult if you are not too experienced in off road driving) difficult, depending on the weight and type of your bike. Mainly mountain passes and climbs, varying degrees of erosion and rocks in them. I didn't meet anyone the whole day and went through some very beautiful country and also some very different climatological zones. After that I went through Mali-ville, then onto Labe (lots of stuff to see, some very spectacular water falls etc.), then down to Mamou, then Kissidougou, then north to Kankan and then from there straight to Bougouni in Mali. Also nice stretch, quite remote too, no traffic and involves one river crossing by pirogue. The guys know what they are doing, so no great drama with the bike.

Do it and enjoy !!

Gidday Hed,

Just been to Guinea and will have to agree with you, its been a definete highlight of my trip so far... The pistes are for sure very challenging, it all started with the road into koundara... Can say now that
rocky downhills are not my favorite, seen too many of those around Foute Djalon. Cap Verge was another highlight, camping on the beach etc etc...

Whatever you hear about horror stories as far as police, its not bad...

Go to GUINEA!
