Fiches in east and south Africa?

When traveling in West Africa I've always used fiches (Passport details, parents name, vehicle details, bla, bla...) which has made the checkpoint stops quick and simple.
How about East and South Africa, do I have as much use for them there?

Interested in this one.....
I guess no, as I've never heard them mentioned by anyone traveling south of Mauritania/Mali.
Others are far better placed to comment though.

Happy travels
Sam

Nope, no fiches needed in East or South Africa, it's a West Africa thing.

On the east coast route, not that many checkstops to begin with (with the exception of Egypt which used to have the tourist convoy thing which stopped a couple of years back but not sure if it was started up again after the uprising) but other than filling in the odd register, no real need for fiches.

I passed through Egypt just after the Revolution (part 1) and got stopped only once by the police. Plenty of checkpoints around, but no hassle.

In 19 months of travel Cape Town to Cairo by the eastern route I could count the number of times I was stopped (other than border crossings) on one hand. And none of those involved any hassle at all.

Don't use them on the road from EA to SA. POlice ask for licence and carnet, sometimes insurance that's all. However I would like to see one of your fiches - what data do you put on one? Do you have a blank example?

Cheers

This is what I have used: http://www.4x4expedition.se/bilder/Fiche.doc

Speeds things up at checkpoint in Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauretania, Mali and at some other borders and embassys. Can even be useful checking in at campings and hotels.

Thanks!

I was stopped many times in southern and east Africa and rarely had to show any documents, a handshake, a smile and a few words about your home, trip and bike were all most of the police wanted, it usually ended up as just a pleasant exchange with a curious local.
