Ethiopian Visa, Cairo or Khartoum?
 

Where to get one for overland tirp. Which place is better and are there any documents necessary (letters, tickets...).

Might be a bit late with this but Cairo is a lot simpler than Khartoum, visa issued in 45 mins, no ticket or letters required, just one form and $63.00 and 1 photo, I tokk pictures of the bike and a photocopy of drivers licence and Carnet, don't know if this helped but it didn't hinder, I also got my Kenya visa first but I dont think they even noticed that.

In Khartoum, the process was painless (March 2011):

USD20, single entry, valid for 2 months from date of issue. Ethiopian Embassy in Khartoum GPS: N15.580400 E32.541980 (not on Tracks4Africa or Google Maps) near SE corner of Farouq cemetery. Need:
1 copy of passport
2 passport photos
Issued the same day if submitted early enough - before 9am

I haven't used the Embassy in Cairo, but I believe that it is straightforward as well.
