Now in Dar heading north and need a reliable shipping address in Ethiopia to receive spare parts.

got some spare parts sent to the airport in Addis. Then got hit with an import tax of something rediculous like 100%. We (Simon and me) ended up convincing them that the value of the goods (about 150 euro's) was actually 8 euro's and that made the import tax bearable. They had a problem with 'motorcycle parts'. This was all done through DHL, who just shrugged and said we had to pay.

So...mark your parts as almost value-less, and probably don't mark them as parts at all. DHL were pretty good, their office is near the airport. (Bola Rd?).

if you get problems with the customs, you can try to use your Carent, to avoid paying the importtax.
But that works not always!!!

A good place to get parts is Nairobi.
Maybe a (unknown) friend is coming there??

assuming you mean a visa for Ethiopia, you had to get them in Nairobi last year. ie not at the border. they had a new, super efficient while-u-wait (10 mins instead of 3 days) process. to save time running around getting photocopies, we took copies of carnet, motorcycle licence and motorcycle registration along with us. I can't remember which they did and didn't want, but otherwise we'd have been delayed.

Just go to the embassy of Ethiopia in Nairobi, get the visa and go!!!

But maybe you are so lucky that you can cross the the border without visa!

Thanks for the input. I was just checking to see if Ethiopia was like South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya, where you can skip the hassle of making two trips to the embassy in some stinking capital city, and get one at the border. Turns out, you must bring two copies of your carnet and international drivers license when applying and they do it while you wait.

The fee was seventy US for a ninety-day multiple entry. Embassy staff stamped both documents and said that I would not have to have the actual carnet stamped at the border. Just crossed this morning and they stamped the carnet anyway and never asked to see what the embassy stamped nor did they request to see my (expired)international drivers license. Very fast exit from Kenya and enry into Ethiopia.

Still waiting on news for Sudan though--applied in Dar es Salaam but must check again in Addis Ababa. The Sudanese staff was friendly and after a meeting with the Consular General, he wrote a letter of recommendation. Quien sabe?

Anyone know of a good bike or general mechanic in Addis Ababa? Ohlins mono took a crap a few hundred miles south of Ethiopian border and stayed compressed. Need to drop rear section to access the shock on Dakars and good tools would help.

Hi Glen,

if you can't get a visa for Sudan follow us via Djibouti. Take a Dhow (boat) to Yemen, then Oman to Dubai over land. From here you can go further to Iran by ferry. Then north to Europe or south to Pakistan and India, like you want!!
Sorry for the problems with the Oehlins, we are very lucky and got them chequed in Dubai. But that won't help you.

Thanks--I am at the end of my journey after Africa and will ship to Central America from wherever the trail ends here. Spent five weeks a year or so ago trying for a Iranian visa in Istanbul but like Sudan, it was hit or miss. Wound up taking a fantastic detour through Syria, Jordan, Palestine and Egypt. Best thing that ever happened--that's why we call it adventure travel.

Next year will return to Borneo for six months studying Mandarin for the ride into China. Speaking the local language makes tremendous difference when trying to discover a world beyond guidebook interpretations.

There is a company in Addis called Africa Riding Adventures that you could contact. The owner is an Italian / Ethiopian guy called Flavio Bonaiuti, who rides a KTM 950. I think he runs tours of Ethiopia on Honda Dominators. I don't know if he has a workshop, but I assume he must do some work on his bikes?
