East Africa to Capetown via??

Will be heading south from Tanzania end April 2008. Plan is from Arushia south to Mozambique, Malawe, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and down to Capetown via the west coast. Don't know how long the trip will take but that is the proposed route.

Anyone care to join me is more than welcome.

Cheers
Ivan

Might join you

Hi

I hope to be in Kenya/Tanzania by end April (from Europe on-route to Cape Town). I'll keep in touch over the coming months to see if our paths will cross on time.

I was originaly thinking of doing the length of Mozambique & then into SA but might end up changing my mind.

Cheers

S. and E. African info

Hi,

now in July me and my fiance are thinking of heading south from Kampala, Uganda, through Tanzania and Mozambique to Capetown..

I'm wondering, since you're already well on your journey, if you could help us out with some questions?

First, we don't have the money or the time to get a carnet.. is it still possible to enter Tanzania, Mozambique, and South Africa without a carnet?

We were told that we could get a temporary insurance or temporary import license--maybe both?--instead of the carnet..

also, we'll be taking a cheap 250cc or even 175cc.. do you think we could make the journey in two and one half months?

alright any advice is greatly appreciated

thanks a bunch..

safe journey!

Steve

Hi Steve,

I have a Carnet and I have been using it to get this far. But from what I hear is that you can do it all on Temp import permits. Look for "Amybaja" or "Robboxlv" in here, they rode from the UK down the west and Rob up the east side of Africa without a Carnet so may be able to assist more?

BTW, my bike is still in TZ, have run into some probs.

Cheers

Steve, I was told by South African customs that a carnet was non-negotiable. Then again, I entered ZA via the Capetown airport so things might be a little tighter that way (with the carnet I had my bike in 15-20 minutes). I used my carnet to enter Tanzania because it was fast/easy, but I was told at the border that TIP's were available. Enjoy the ride- it's a fun one! Hook.
